Cruz started acting as a teenager in Spain. She was in Spanish movies such as "Jamón Jamón" (1992), "Belle Époque" (1992), and "Open Your Eyes" (1997). She became well-known in the United States after being in "Vanilla Sky" (2001) and "Blow" (2001).

She has worked with Pedro Almodóvar many times, including in "Live Flesh" (1997), "Volver" (2006), "Broken Embraces" (2009), and "Parallel Mothers" (2021). In 2008, she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” directed by Woody Allen. This made her the first Spanish actress to win an Academy Award.
