Sega kindly asks that you stop uploading its Sonic Boom TV show to YouTube

Think of the hedgehogs (and the contractual obligations)

Sega is giving Sonic the Hedgehog fans a "heads up," telling them — rather nicely — that if they've ever uploaded a full episode (or multiple episodes) of the company's Sonic Boom television show to YouTube, now's probably a good time to take those down. Sonic's parent company is going to start sending out copyright claims to infringing YouTube accounts, and Sega would rather not see fans' accounts get dinged.

Here's the full, kindly worded warning posted to Sega of America's blog this week:

Soon, a small handful of you may be getting messages from us on YouTube about your ability to upload and maintain certain Sonic Boom TV show content. Don't panic! We're not the kind of bullies that want to have your accounts damaged or your rings stolen just because you like the Sonic series.

In the short term, we'll be sending some letters to people who have uploaded full episodes of Sonic Boom TV Show content, so that they can remove them without needing to worry about getting a copyright strike on their account. Users who don't remove them on their own will have them taken down.

We think the stuff you guys do is awesome, and we thank you for your understanding and continued support. It's also important to note that this applies specifically to the Sonic Boom TV show. If you guys have any other questions, please do let us know. Thanks very much!

Sonic Boom, a co-production from Sega of America and OuiDo! Productions, kicked off in 2014 and airs stateside on Cartoon Network. More than 50 episodes, each roughly 11 minutes in length, have been produced.

As Sega notes on its blog, the impending takedown notices apply only to the Sonic Boom animated series — which has its share of unexpected humor —not the video games based on the show. Sega has another Sonic Boom game coming later this year: Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice for Nintendo 3DS.
