The first free update for Monster Hunter Rise adds an extra dose of earth, wind and fire to the game courtesy of several new monsters as well as the removal of the hunter rank cap.

Capcom officially confirmed the addition of two elder dragons to the game, the fire-spewing Teostra and the master of wind Kushala Daora, during its April Digital Event. The two monsters are just two of the new additions to the Nintendo Switch game, which also gets elder dragon Chameleos as well as apex versions of ornery burrower Diablos and king of the skies Rathalos.

Players will be able to make new weapons and armor from the new monsters and also unlock new petalaces and Rampage Skills. The monsters will be available on April 28 via the Monster Hunter Rise 2.0 update, which is a free patch for the game.

In addition to new monsters, the update will also unlock the game’s hunter rank cap, allowing hunters to go past Level 7. Leveling up will also allow players to access new content, including new Rampage quests as well as regular missions for Apex monsters. Prior to the update, Apex monsters could only be fought in Rampage mode. The level cap for buddies such as Palicoes and Palamutes will also be raised to Level 50. The default level of buddies hired via Iori will also increase.

The game will also get new event quests as part of the 2.0 patch. Rise’s system for event quests is more in line with older Monster Hunter games, which required players to download them. Once downloaded, the quests will be available in both online and offline modes. Some of the event quests teased include:

  • Out of Sight, Out of Mind’s Eye, a six-star quest that requires you to hunt a Tetranadon
  • Beast of the Shadows, a seven-star quest
  • Haste Makes Waste, a seven-star quest

Folks who play both Rise and Monster Hunter Stories 2 will also get some crossover goodies in the form of special armor. Stories 2 already previewed the Kamura set from Rise but Capcom also previewed the Rider armor that can be used in the mainline game as part of its extended teaser video.

In addition to the aforementioned free content, the Monster Rise 2.0 update will also include paid DLC. These include character edit vouchers, which allow you to fully change your character’s appearance, including their gender. One free voucher will be provided to players as part of the update with subsequent copies requiring payment.
