Who is Jasper Johns?
Jasper Johns is an American painter, sculptor and print maker whose work is associated with Abstract Expressionism, Neo-Dada, and Pop Art. Johns was an accredited artist who received many awards throughout his career. He was the recipient of the National Medal of Arts in 1990, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011. In 2018, The New York Times named him the "foremost living artist" in the United States. Johns is best known for his painting Flag, an encaustic painting made using hot beeswax that unsurprisingly depicts the American flag with no significant variations from its true form. His sculptures are also made with wax and often feature complex patterns and textures with collage elements like newsprint, impressions of various random objects or casts of the artist’s own body.
