Argyria
By; Eric Nietzel
What is Argyria?  Caused by a chemical
                       exposure to silver
                       (through ingestion or
                       exposure)
 Binds with the cells usually
                       binding to selenium molecules
                    Symptoms exacerbate when
                       sunlight oxidizes the silver
                    May stimulate pigment
                       production
 Much like an “all over tattoo”
                    Can develop small amounts
                       from procedures such as
                       accupuncture.
Signs and
Symptoms
• Staining of the gums and
    mucosal layers
• Gray-black staining of the skin
    (can be extensive or minute)
• Some believe there is tissue
    damage but there is not
    enough research to confirm
    this
Diagnostic tests
•Fluorescent X-ray
•Skin Tissue Biopsy
•Medical History
Is there a Genetic
Disposition?
•No genetic disposition however
there are other factors that may
contribute to this process.
•Low Vitamin E and Selenium.
•People with slower metabolisms
•The use of certain remedies
passed down from family
member.
Expected
     Outcomes?
•Most of the time it is
irreversible depending on
the severity of symptoms
•Use of Hydroquinone (
a skin lotion )
•Use of Lasers to remove
pigmented skin/cells
Nursing
      Implications

•Thorough Medical history
•Proper nutrition
•Instruct patient about the use of
sunscreen
•Educate patient about the side
effects related to the use of
certain CAM
•Teach patient coping skills to deal
with body image changes
•Refer patients to Support Groups
•Educate patient about the
disease and its course
