Biography

  • Nu-metal four piece named after frontwoman, Otep hailing from California, US formed in 2000, preferring to define themselves as Artcore to better reflect their inclusion of an array of genres with everything from rock to pop to jazz to hip-hop.

With influences drawing from a range of musicians such as: Marilyn Manson, Selputura, Black Sabbath and Nirvana, Otep (the stage name of frontwoman Otep Shamaya while also functioning as an anagram of poet) created a strong live presence from the get go.

In 2001 the band were invited onto the bill of Ozzfest after impressing Sharon Osborne at one of their live shows, amazingly their performance at the festival was only their eighth live show. As word got out, they caught the attention of Capitol Records and signed with them later that year. Playing several shows around their hometown of California, Otep generated a loyal following before releasing their highly anticipated debut in the form of the “Jihad” EP. The following year came the release of their full length album “Sevas Tra” peaking at number 175 on the US Billboard charts. The album featured the singles “Blood Pigs” and “Possession”.

Teaming up with Grammy nominated producer Greg Wells who’s worked with the likes of Aerosmith, Elton John and Burt Bacharach, Otep began work on their second album “House of Secrets” released in 2004. Spending the next three years touring, Otep played alongside: Black Label Society, Slipknot, Lamb of God and Hatebreed while making regular appearances at Black Sabbath’s annual Ozzfest.

In 2007 Otep signed with Koch Records to release their third album “The Ascension”, heavily supported by their tour with Static-X, the album peaked at number 81 in the Billboard charts while scoring number three in the US Independent charts. A move to Victory Records in 2009 for the album “Smash the Control Machine” featured appearances from Koichi Fukuda and Emilie Autumn and a co-write on the track “You’re a Woman Now” with songwriter Holly Knight.

On the up as they released their fifth studio album “Atavist” in 2011 has seen Otep to rise in the charts as they continue to wow audiences with their electric and memorable live performances.

Live reviews

  • Otep

Nu Metal isn't a genre of music that i've ever thought would interest me, so I never bought or listened to Otep prior to my experience seeing her live. My friend told me that i'd enjoy the evening, so I half-heartedly agreed and thought that I was just going along for the ride. But I was very much mistaken, the evening was more than I could have imagined and I absolutely loved the music! With such an extensive back catalogue of tracks dating back to the early 2000s, the 90 minute set didn't seem to cover nearly all of what I wanted to hear, even as a brand new fan. I have been to hundreds of concerts over the years, but Otep was right up there with the best with the sheer commitment and energy that she gave in her performance, I felt exhausted simply watching! The sound balance was great, and the very well structured phrases of Fists Fall, and Warhead were the catchiest of them all.

Otep has a fantastic voice and blasted out some incredibly powerful and controlled notes, leaving the audience hungry for more. To top it off, the sound and visual aids for the shows was fantastic. I have since bought the most recent album and will definitely be getting more...i've been converted!

  • Like all of her shows, this one was amazing. The band performs very high-energy shows that keep the crowd engaged and moving. The band is passionate about their music and it shows in their performance. This show featured music from all of their albums, including the most recent release. Otep also did a meet and greet session after the show to connect with her fans.

The venue was also very good. The Gin Mill's sound quality is great. They offer food and beverages in the attached restaurant, which includes bar seating, booths, and outdoor seating.

Overall, it was a great show and a great experience. I would definitely recommend this venue and I would definitely recommend seeing Otep live.

  • It was my first concert but I knew, because there were other bands playing, that she played the most amazing show ever. I will be forever a fan of her and if she ever comes again to LA to perform again I buying tickets again. She was just so phenomenal and I'm glad I could even touch her from being in the front row. I've discovered her music three years back and she's just absolutely brilliant live. during the show she taught to never be silent on issues of life's most brutal controversies. I can't explain how Inspirstional her music is to me live she's just so amazing to me.

  • Otep rocked! I was anxious as the Joliet concert at the Forge was such a disappointment due to not being able to hear her throughout the entire concert when the music started playing.

Mike, the new sound guy, did an awesome job. He stayed on top of the system and made some adjustments on the fly. It made the concert for me.

I met Ari and told him about the great job Mike did. People always complain but rarely complement great service.

With my faith in Otep renewed, I'm also going to her concert tomorrow night!

  • Otep was awesome! This was my first time to see them. They put on a very energetic and entertaining show. I was in the pit and got knocked on my ass several times lol. I didn't care for any of the opening bands though...they were too commercial for my taste.
