Biography

  • Mariza dos Reis Nunes (born 16th December, 1973), A.K.A Mariza, has become one of the most popular fado stars of the 20th century, combining this traditional Portuguese folk style with the contemporary sounds of gospel, soul and jazz.

Following the death of fado star Amália Rodrigues in 1999, the nation were in mourning at the loss of this celebrated national treasure. As a tribute, Mariza was invited to perform a tribute to Rodrigues’ memory, with the success prompting Mariza to be encouraged to then create an album dedicated to fado music. The result was 2001’s “Fado em Mim,” which was to be a wild success, selling over 140,000 copies, an incredible feat for an artist singing in this style. It helped to reignite interest in fado music in Portugal, finding a growing market for Mariza’s music.

Mariza continued to make music in this style, releasing her second album, “Fado Curvo” in 2003, helping lead the New Fado movement into the charts. The album featured reinterpretations of traditional fado standards, gaining international recognition for her music. She received BBC Radio 3’s award for ‘Best European Artist in World Music,’ and went on to appear on BBC’s popular “Later With Jools Holland” show. With growing popularity and national stardom Mariza was invited to sing at the Athens Olympic Games in 2004, performing “A Thousand Years” as a duet with Sting.

Following an EBBA Award (European Border Breakers Awards) in 2004, she released her third album, “Transparante” a year later, recording the album in Brazil. Mariza toured across Australia, Finland, the US and Argentina in an attempt to spread her music. “Transparente” went on to reach the top ten in several countries, including The Netherlands, Spain and Finland.

In 2007, Mariza received a Latin Grammy nomination for ‘Best Folk Album,’ for her record, “Concerto em Lisbon.” This was followed by “Terra,” an album that incorporated jazz, flamenco, Latin and African sounds alongside her traditional fado. But in 2010, with “Fado Traditional,” she returned to the folk roots of fado, whilst maintaining her own unique style.

Live reviews

  • Mariza

Mariza, born, Mariza Nunes in 1973, is a fado singer-songwriter who is in fact on the World Connection label. Originally from Mozambique, she moved to Portugal when she was three years old. She has had such a fruitful career up until this point, selling out venues wherever she performs, one of he biggest successes was collaborating with Sting for the duet of “A Thousand Years” in 2004. Tonight, she performs songs such as “Loucura” and “Meu Fado Meu”; which are some of her biggest songs to date, making this receptive crowd dance from start to finish. Her stage presence is enchanting and her voice is original. She knows exactly how to use it as an instrument. It’s no wonder also that she has been such an international hit with her five studio albums all making it to a position higher than 4 in the Portuguese charts. Anonymously, she has developed a pretty loyal following in Finland and Poland too. Hats off to you, Mariza!

  • This was a great show. A long sequence of applause welcomed her, showing that the audience was full of fans even in Madrid. Musicians were only five, among which the well known Luis Gueirrero at the Portuguese guitar. Recently added (for me, at least) was an accordionist playing a bit jazzy style.

The show was a mix of classical Fado songs and some others more world music. A lot of humour in Portuguese but also in castillan well appreciated by the audience. The show lasted one and a half hour. Difficult to leave the place.

  • Marisa is a force of nature. She is exceptionally talented and, at the same time, so human and so grateful. She has a way of respecting the audience and the people she works with, which is quite rare.

She engaged so much and so well with the audience that she managed to loosen everyone and totally reverse the atmosphere, which was initially a little ‘stiff’. I hope many people discovered how fado can be a modern type of music that deals with topics which are universal. She, and her musicians, are quite phenomenal.

  • Just saw Mariza in Cardiff, she was absolutely PHENOMENAL!

    Unbelievable!

At one point she sang without a microphone and the audience was completely silent, stunned listening to her otherworldly, sensational vocals !!

She is a mighty force on stage.

I’m already searching online for her next concert.

She has a natural organic gift, this is not something you can be taught.

Thanks Mariza, I had the most wonderful experience.

I’m hoping to see her in Portugal.

  • Last year we visited Vienna, specially to see a performance of Mariza. It was a great disappointment. a lot of time was spent by Mariza toget people to join a sing-along. That failed. We come from Amsterdam to Vienna, specially to see Mariza and her songs. However that sing-along is a waist of time. Very disappointed.
