Nimoy as Spock; Lindsey as Goober
Sometimes an actor has embodied a role so perfectly that we can't imagine anyone else in it, like Rose Nylund, Barney Fife, Jack Sparrow and Han Solo. Mr. Spock from the 1960s TV show "Star Trek" is one those roles. Leonard Nimoy became Spock, so much so that many fans were up in arms over the casting of Zachary Quinto in the most recent movie series.
So imagine, if you will, that Spock was portrayed in the original series by George Lindsey, an Alabama native who played "Goober" on "The Andy Griffith Show" and "HeeHaw."
According to an article on MeTV.com, Lindsey was "Star Trek" creator Gene Rodenberry's first choice to play Spock.
The shows were running at the same time and, at times, recording on the same studio lot in Culver City, Calif. MeTV says the sets for Walker's Drugstore and Floyd's Barber Shop on "Andy Griffith" appear in a couple of episodes of "Star Trek."
Nimoy and Borgnine, a close friend of Lindsey's, both said the claim is true – Nimoy in a 2006 interview and Borgnine in his 2008 autobiography, "Ernie." It's difficult to imagine Lindsey, who gained a reputation as a hayseed, as the logical and unemotional Vulcan.
