The Diamond Tetra is a peaceful shoaling fish that visually improves as it ages. Its name comes from its speckling of reflective scales on an iridescent silver body. When young the fish may appear a little dull, but given the right environment can soon be the most attractive fish in the aquarium. Although the fish will tolerate harder water, it should only be kept in soft to medium conditions over a long period. The Diamond Tetra is best kept in aquariums with plenty of open spaces, subdued light or shade provided by floating plants, and a dark bottom. An excellent small shoaling fish, but may nip at elaborately finned fish such as male Guppies or Siamese Fighters.
