The Longfin barb is an understated aquarium fish due to its often drab colours when young. Given the chance to grow and mature in an aquarium it will develop a highly attractive iridescent body colouration, reddish fins and a long flowing dorsal fin. The longfin barb is a shoaling fish which is best kept in medium to large aquariums with open swimming spaces and hiding spots amongst wood and/or hardy plants. Although it prefers softer water, it will acclimatize easily to a wide range of conditions, including unheated aquaria.
