Flood-Proof Housing

Flood-Proof Housing

Prototypes for houses which would go beyond even the highest of sustainability criteria (in use within the building industry today) and ‘do no harm’ at any point in their lifetime. The houses are live-work houses and three of the four house types proposed are amphibious, capable of existing on land and water, in order to have resilience against floods.

The houses are self-sufficient in terms of service provision, yet arranged into a collaborative community of mixed-use neighbourhoods, with good connectivity to surrounding areas.

This was a theoretical project, whose principles and findings could, however, be put to use in designing sustainable houses of the future. The project includes innovation in building materials and products, self-sufficiency and efficient service-provision, flood resilience, localised food production, flexible and adaptable layouts and building aesthetic.
