How Did Kelly Ripa’s Quarantine Secret Get Out?

She’s been on vacation in the Caribbean this whole time—not that you would’ve known from watching Live with Kelly and Ryan.

The world might never have known where Kelly Ripa has been riding out the coronavirus pandemic had a fellow ABC employee not told People about it. Despite the remotely filmed continuation of her and Ryan Seacrest’s morning show Live with Kelly and Ryan, Ripa’s location remained unknown until Thursday, or at least undiscussed on air. During a virtual, internal ABC town hall, she reportedly discussed her decision to remain in place on a Caribbean island—that’s as specific as the location seems to have gotten—where she decamped before shutdown orders became the norm in the U.S.

“The family was on a trip in the Caribbean when told to shelter in place and decided to stay put,” an anonymous source who was at the meeting told People.

“We had planned a trip for our family, and it was supposed to be our entire family of course,” Ripa said at the town hall, according to the source. “And we arrive and three days later, the entire world changed, really. I mean, everything shut down; the government shut down; our country shut down. I hate to use the word stuck, but we were. We decided to stay where we were.” She reportedly added that she and Seacrest continued with their show “because we just felt like with everything that was going on in the world that perhaps, some normalcy of just doing what we normally do, even though it was like in very unusual circumstances, would be the best thing for us.”

Tensions have run high over who goes where, and how, during the coronavirus crisis, especially when it comes to the rich and/or famous (see: Kristin Cavallari’s bolt back from the Bahamas, or the reception of any number of people who say they’re stranded at luxury resorts). You could see why Ripa might have wanted to maintain the presumption that she was filming from her home in Manhattan. And while it remains unclear why the matter came up during ABC’s town hall, you could see why the anonymous employee wanted others to know too.
