The Great Famine of 1695–97, or simply The Great Famine, was a catastrophic famine that affected present Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Norway and Sweden: at the time, all of these areas belonged to the Swedish Empire with the exception of Norway, which was a Danish province. The areas which were worst affected were the Swedish province of Finland and Norrland in Sweden proper.

In the then Swedish province of Finland, the Great Famine of 1695–97 was also referred to as The Years of Many Deaths by some Finnish historians, because it killed about a third of the Finnish population in only two years, or about 150,000. It was Finland's worst demographic catastrophe. [3]

In 1698 Juho married Venla Juhontytär Heroja. Juho Erkinpoika and Venla Juhontytär were second cousins. ^[2]

Finland during the Great Northern War was dominated by the Russian invasion and subsequent military occupation of Finland, then part of the Sweden, from 1714 until the treaty of Nystad 1721, which ended the Great Northern War. The period is also referred to as den stora ofreden ("the great discord") in Swedish or isoviha ("the great wrath") in Finnish.

Atrocities were at their worst between 1714–17 when the infamous Swedish Count Gustaf Otto Douglas, who had defected to the Russian side during the war, was in charge of the occupation.

In addition to the depredations of the Russian occupants, Finland was struck – as were most other Baltic countries at the time – by the plague. In Helsinki, 1,185 people died: nearly two thirds of the population. Plague had struck Finland already before the Russian invasion sapping the strength of Sweden in Finland. [4]

At some point Juho and Venla bought the house and put it in Juho's name but the cries of the law in court this store was the first time I only 01.10.1722 and 09.10.1724 for the third time. ^[1]

Juho held a lot of responsibility in the Parish. By 1724 a host of the Kuortane Church, a district juror, and operated throughout the territory as a member of the Board of Inspectors. ^[4]

In 1727 Juho transferred the farm to his son eldest son Matti whom he thought was was a mere disobedience, whom held the farm from 1728-1730. Juho Erkinpoika in fact submitted to the court pleading that showed father and son strongly disputing and this resulted in Matti's departure from the house. ^[5] From 1732 to to 1737 Juho was again the isäntä ^[3]

The Russo–Swedish War of 1741–1743, known as the Hats' Russian War in Sweden and the Hats' War in Finland, which resulted in the Lesser Wrath (Finnish: Pikkuviha, Swedish: Lilla ofreden), or the occupation of Finland, was instigated by the Hats, a Swedish political party that aspired to regain the territories lost to Russia during the Great Northern War, and by French diplomacy, which sought to divert Russia's attention from supporting its long-standing ally, the Habsburg monarchy, in the War of the Austrian Succession.

The territory ceded to Russia was added to the Russian gains in the Treaty of Nystad (Finnish: Uusikaupunki) in 1721, under the Governorate of Vyborg. This was later incorporated into the Russian Grand Duchy of Finland in 1812. [5]
