She thanked people for checking in, acknowledging that 'there’s no easy way to say this and actually it doesn’t even feel real writing this' before talking about her diagnosis and treatment in detail: ‘Earlier this year I was diagnosed with breast cancer and a couple of weeks ago I received the devastating news that the cancer has advanced to other parts of my body. I’m currently undergoing weekly sessions and I am fighting as hard as I possibly can.’

In her message, she thanks ‘the wonderful NHS doctors and nurses who have been and continue to be heroes’ and says she'll keep followers updated on her progress.

The news follows a social media hiatus for the 38-year-old, with no updates on Instagram since 2018 and a Twitter bio that reads 'taking a time out'. Despite the breather, the post has already amassed nearly 50,000 likes and 3,000 comments, with friends and followers writing supportive messages.

Piers Morgan said 'Horrible news. Good luck Sarah', Ian 'H' Watkins from Steps said 'Sending HUGE ❤️❤️❤️ Stay Strong xx We're all behind you xx' and TOWIE's Jess Wright sent lots of heart emojis.

Her former band mate Nadine Coyle commented on the post ‘I love you!!!! You have always been able to achieve miracles when needed!! I am here for the all the way & always will be!!!’ and Cheryl posted a broken heart emoji.

Following 18 top ten hits and five albums, Girls Aloud parted ways in 2013. Since then, Sarah starred in Freefall, Rush For Your Wife and St Trinian's 2, as well as Coronation Street, before turning to reality TV. She took part in Tumble and the Jump, and won Celebrity Big Brother in 2017.

We're wishing you all the best, Sarah!
