ree Dollar Bill Cinema has
grown quite a bit in its 16 years. We
produce two fi lm festivals; provide
programming every month of the
year, including an ever-growing
series of outdoor movies over the
summer; and also off er a fi scal
sponsorship program that allows
fi lmmakers and burgeoning organizations to raise money using our
nonprofi t status. And our newest addition is Reel Queer Youth, a video
production and media literacy course for LGBT and allied youth ages
13-20. Fourteen young people made four short fi lms in just fi ve days. See
them at REEL QUEER YOUTH SHORTS (p. 59). ree Dollar Bill
Cinema is committed to supporting fi lmmakers by showcasing their work
and helping them raise funds, and also creating tomorrow’s fi lmmakers
today, thus ensuring future LGBT visibility through fi lm.
e saying “it takes a village” could not be more true when it comes
to planning and executing this fi lm festival. (I like to think it’s the savvy
population of a small metropolitan town rather than a village, but that
would be a pretty long saying.) I am so grateful for the hundreds of people
who come forward to help in so many ways. We simply could not do what
we do without their support and enthusiasm.
I want to thank the ree Dollar Bill Cinema staff , whose passion for
and dedication to LGBT fi lm and our community is unparalleled. ank
you to our hundreds of volunteers who so generously give of their time and
expertise. ank you to the ree Dollar Bill Cinema Board of Directors,
whose direction and guidance are integral to our success. I also want to
thank our sponsors, grant makers, members, and donors, without whom
we could not accomplish so much on such a small budget.
ere is still time to support our eff orts. While ticket sales are an important
source of revenue, they do not sustain our organization. Become
a member and enjoy a multitude of benefi ts at the festival. Donate to our
annual fund and help ensure we are around for years to come. Your dollars
ensure the future of our programming and keep our community in focus.
ank you for coming out to the movies and supporting ree
Dollar Bill Cinema!
Rachael Brister
Executive Director
ank you for being a part of
the 2011 Seattle Lesbian & Gay
Film Festival! When reading this
program, you’ll be overwhelmed
by the many tantalizing “sweets”
in this year’s lineup: delicious
short fi lms, refi ned documentaries,
and even sugary guilty
pleasures.
rough this fi lm festival, we
have the opportunity to relive our history and address contemporary
issues. We can also share our stories with people new to the LGBT
community. I look forward to the many familiar faces I’ll see in the
audience, on screen, and on stage (returning to the festival with their
latest fi lms are directors Wendy Jo Carlton, Q. Allan Brocka, Casper
Andreas, and others). And it’s always a pleasure to be surprised by
something new. For example, I was captivated by remarkable independent
fi lms like THE WISE KIDS and the locally made HEART
BREAKS OPEN.
Our program is so strong this year thanks to the amazing work of
our program team. e screening committee members and leads Kurt
Schlatter and Julie Borden put in countless hours. And Lead Programmer
Keith Bacon, whose dedication and energy makes all of our
year-round programming shine, is responsible for bringing some real
gems to the festival, including the world premiere of OUTLAND
(part of our Gay TV Dinners program).
Finally, I’m thrilled that we are able to have the powerful VITO
as our Closing Night fi lm. Vito Russo was a remarkable individual,
and his book e Celluloid Closet was infl uential and enlightening to
me, and I’m sure to many of you. If you have any appreciation for
LGBT fi lms at all, you cannot miss this aff ecting homage, fi ttingly
presented on the biggest screen in Seattle.
Enjoy the festival,
(A)SEXUAL
Angela Tucker; 2011; US; 75 min.
In the summer of 2002, David Jay’s new website brought worldwide attention to asexuals:
people like himself who do not experience sexual attraction…to anyone. With humor and
intelligence, (A)SEXUAL sheds light on the phenomenon and debunks some misconceptions
about people who just don’t want to have sex. From hilarious person-on-the-street
reactions to commentary by sexperts such as Carol McQueen and Dan Savage, the film
addresses everything from relationships and masturbation to common perceptions about
asexuality (including the familiar “you just haven’t met the right person”). Finally, is there a
While surveys have shown that over 100,000 Italian children have at least one gay parent,
Meanwhile, two gay men fly to Toronto to meet with surrogates, trying to become fathers
