Road Train Tours!
Join us today we will take you past some of
the most beautiful sights that Phoenix Park
has to offer. We shall be visiting Farmleigh
House, the stately home where foreign
dignitaries would come to stay during their
visits to Ireland. Also you will be able to take
a break at the Phoenix Park Visitors Centre
where you can have some refreshments and
enjoy some of the most beautiful cakes in the
Phoenix Cafe. So sit back, relax and let us
show you what’s in store!
See the Wellington Testimonial
Monument which is the tallest
obelisk in Europe at a height of
62 Metres (203 ft). Designed
by Sir Robert Smirke, this
monument would have been
taller had the publicly subscribed
funding not run out. It was built
to commemorate the victories
of Arthur Wellesley 1st Duke of
Wellington, also known as The
Iron Duke who was born in Dublin. It was originally
supposed to be erected in Merrion Square , but the local
residents had other opinions and Phoenix Park was
decided as its new location. Construction started in 1817
stopped in 1821 due to lack of funds and was completed
and opened in 1861 to the public.
Phoenix Park is situated on 707 hectares (1750 acres)
and is the home of the oldest zoo in Europe and the 3rd
oldest zoo in the world the world. It covers an area of
69 acres and was founded in 1830 when 43 animals and
72 birds were donated by London Zoo. It was officially
opened to the public in 1831 and currently welcomes over
1,000,000 visitors a year. It now has over 700 animals and
123 different species.
Phoenix Park has 22km of roadways and 11km of
surrounding walls. The walls were used to keep the
wild deer and pheasants contained whilst the park was
established as a Royal Hunting Park for the use of the
Duke of Ormonde in 1662.
The Papal Cross was erected at
the edge of Fifteen Acres for the
visit of Pope John Paul II on 29th
September 1979. Over 1 million
people attended an open air
mass in the park at the time. The
white cross which dominates the
surroundings is 35 metres high
and is built from steel. It was
installed with some difficulty and
finally completed just two weeks
before the Pope arrived.
The American Ambassador’s Residence was originally
known as the Deerfield Residence, built in 1744 and was
the former residence of
the chief Secretary for
Ireland. Before that it was
the Park Baliff’s lodge but
home to the American
Ambassador to Ireland
since 1927.
Farmleigh House is
the official State guest house of Ireland. It was formerly
a residence of the Guinness Family, the world famous
brewers, and is situated on 78 acres. It boasts extensive
mature gardens
with a boating
pond, sunken
garden, mature
oak, Cypress and
pine trees, along
with a herd of
rare native Kerry
Cattle, which
are believed to be one of the oldest breeds in Europe.
Their coat is almost entirely black with a little white
on the udder. Farmleigh House was built in the 18th
century and was then, only a small house but with major
renovations over the years, it was extended to have a 3rd
floor, a ballroom, and a conservatory.
The estate was purchased by the State from the Guinness
Family in 1999 for a sum of €29.2 million and has had
some €23 million worth of refurbishment. Its official use
was to be for state dignitaries on their visits to Ireland,
so far there have been many notable guests such as, the
Chinese Prime Minister, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia,
the King of Malaysia, British Prime Minister Tony Blair,
the Governor-General of New Zealand and Queen
Elizabeth II. It is most definitely worth a stroll around the
house and to explore the beautiful gardens all of which is
free to the public. If you wish, you may disembark here
now, to visit Farmleigh House. Please retain your ticket
to board one of the following trains and see the rest of the
tour.

Ashtown Castle and
Phoenix Park Visitor
Centre. It is also your
chance for a break with
some refreshments at the
Phoenix Park Cafe. The
castle is the oldest building in the park and consists of
a restored medieval tower house, dating from the 15th
century. Restoration began in 1989 and it is located
beside the visitor centre which hosts displays on the
5,500 years of park and surrounding area history.
The castle was found hidden within the walls of a
much larger and more recent building that was being
used by the Papal Nuncio until 1978. At this time
the larger building was deemed unsafe and had to be
demolished due to dry rot. But as the walls were being
demolished, Ashtown Castle was discovered. It has
now been restored as part of the Phoenix Park Visitors
Centre. It is originally thought to have dated from
the 1430’s, as it is built to dimensions that conform
with government policy of the time, which offered
£10 to those who built a castle for their own safety.
The castle was later incorporated into the construction
of Ashtown Lodge which was to serve as the official
residence of the Under Secretary from 1782.
The Phoenix
Monument just
ahead, it is a
Corinthian column
with a Phoenix rising
up out of the ashes
at its pinnacle. It
was erected by Lord
Chesterfield in 1747. During the early part of the 20th
century it was moved from its current location to the
side of the road to facilitate motor racing. The Office
of Public Works moved it back to its original position
in the centre of the avenue in the 1990’s.

Áras An Uachtarain is the official residence of the
President of Ireland.
In 1911 the house
underwent a large
extension programme
for the visits of George
V and Queen Mary.
The house had been left
empty for some years
until the office of the President of Ireland was created
in 1937. In 1938 the first President Douglas Hyde lived
in the residential quarters on the first floor of the main
building. Later Presidents moved to the new residential
wing attached to the main house that had been built for
the visit of George V in 1911. However in 1990 Mary
Robinson, the first female President, moved back into
the older main part of the building, her successor Mary
McAleese lived in the 1911 wing.
Phoenix Park Polo Grounds, The All Ireland Polo Club
was founded in 1873 by Horace Rochfort of Clogrenane
which makes it the oldest polo club in Europe.
To protect Phoenix
Park , policy today only
allows sports which are
historically associated with
the park to be permitted.
Over 14 Km of cycle
paths have been laid down
in the park and family cycle trails have recently been
introduced around the Fifteen Acres, where beautiful
views of the Dublin Mountains, tree lined paths, wild
flower meadows, lakeside and woodland walks are just
some of the many opportunities to enjoy in the park.
Phoenix Park Cricket Club is the oldest cricket club in
Ireland and one of the oldest in the world having been
formed in 1830. In the early 1860’s The Lord Lieutenant
of Ireland, sponsored a bill in Parliament granting civil
servants a cricket ground in the Phoenix Park. The Club
played its first match on the front lawns of Áras an
Uachtarain in April 1863. The club is still in existence
today and its grounds are located beside the Citadel
Pond.
