Sixteen boards later REIMAN hadadvanced to the third round and ROOT was on thesidelines. The score after 48 boards was ROOT 130,REIMAN 70. The 59-year-old Goldman is still perhapsbest-known to the majority of players from hisrole as a member of the original Aces, Ira Corn’sTexas-based squad created to bring the world championshiptitle to the U.S.A cursory examination of Goldman’s accomplishmentsis sufficient to reveal his status as an icon ofthe game. An ACBL and WBF Grand Master,Goldman has amassed 25,000 masterpoints, won fourworld championships, and has 19 NABC titles. He is also an author (Aces Scientific, Winners andLosers at the Bridge Table), bidding theorist andteacher.Goldman has given back to the game as well, serving as ACBL recorder from 1968-88, and as aprominent member of the Competition and ConventionsCommittee.Continued on page 9Californians pull aheadin Red Ribbon PairsJack Margid of San Francisco and SusanFurchtenicht of Santa Maria CA had two strong sessionsin the Red Ribbon Pairs qualifying and will leadthe way into today’s two final sessions. Daily Bulletin Page 3The one marketplace in which bridge has showngrowth in the last decade is the computer world. Thereare two kinds of computer bridge, stand-alone softwareand on-line activities. The latter offer a multitudeof terrific services, including web sites and interactive“virtual” bridge clubs. The latest company to sprout on the Net is myown, Bridge Today University, in which people cantake bridge lessons by E-mail. (A short commercialbreak: This new company, which includes BridgeToday Magazine, is now offering up to 22% in shares,$8,000 per one percent, treated as loans -- interestedparties may contact me by E-mail for more details orbuttonhole our PR rep, ex-tennis promoter Larry King, between now and Sunday.)Stand-alone products (those you buy for homeuse, which are not connected to the Internet) havebeen most successful when they’re programmed withspecific hands for teaching. Software that allows theuser to play against the computer has not shown abilityabove the novice level until recently, with theemergence of a product called, “Goren In a Box,” or“GIB.” GIB was created by Matt Ginsberg, and yesterdaymorning played a challenge match againsthumans Michael Rosenberg and Zia, shown byvugraph on the OKbridge Internet Club.GIB and his partner, GIB2, lost to the humans, but not without a good fight. Observers say that thewitty Zia may have been concentrating too much onhis glib table talk, but neither GIB nor his clonedpartner took notice. (At one point Zia psyched theGIBs out of a 4ª game and this was considered unfairpool. The director failed to change the result, however.) On one of the more emotional boards, theGIBs found their way to a respectable sacrifice againstrather complicated bidding methods by the humans.Dlr: South « A 10 9 4Vul: Noneª Q© A 9 8 3¨ J 9 7 6BTU (Bridge Today University) • Advanced Lessons by E-mailYour professors: Editors of Bridge Today Magazine, Pamela and Matthew Granovetter or Larry Cohen.Fall term begins September 21. The human Rosenberg, however, demonstratedthe other extreme as he opened a whimsical3© (multi) in second position. (Rosenberg goes byby Matthew GranovetterFALL REGISTRATIONthe pseudonym Nod, which stands for “Nine Of Diamonds,”a card known as the “Curse of Scotland.”)North passed and Zia, East, bid 3«. This toldRosenberg to pass if he held spades and bid 4ª otherwise. Now GIB threw in a brave four-level overcalland Rosenberg was forced to bid 4ª, as his partnercommanded (pass would have indicated spades). Perhapsit took an inhuman partnership to overcome thischicanery, as North, GIB2, raised to 5©.It was at this point critics of the GIBs (showingthat human jealousy trait) pointed out that in a welloiledpartnership, North-South would have been ableto make a responsive double of 4ª with the Northcards, allowing South to bid 4«. This may be true, but the direct 5© raise had the merit of escaping thedouble, as Zia, unsure that a heart trick would cash, meekly passed, allowing the GIBs to steal the show.Rosenberg led the ªJ and Zia cashed two clubtricks and led a third club. GIB was about to leanover and claim when it suddenly discarded a spade(to the dismay of its Dr. Frankenstein inventor, nodoubt). Rosenberg won the ¨Q and quickly shot backthe fourth club for Zia to ruff. GIB was no longerable to discard a second spade on the ¨J, and thecontract was three down. This was a bit humiliatingto the GIBs, but even more to Zia who had not defeateda five-level contract three tricks undoubledsince before the war (any war).Rosenberg was quick to excuse GIB’s play. “He’sonly wrong when I hold four clubs to the queen. If Ihold three to the queen or a doubleton club and diamondsare 3-0, his spade discard actually gains atrick.” Reprieved by the computer-like analysis of thehuman on his left, GIB was all smiles. It was heartwarmingto see.A final thought: “In the last decade, the computertidal wave has swept away all before it,” said Zia afterwards.“But bridge is the one bastion of humanexistence that will never be toppled by a machine.”He may be right, but I still think the Internet willbecome a fantastic marketplace for teaching thegame.Matthew Granovetter is editor of Bridge TodayMagazine and Dean of Bridge Today University, with advanced classes by E-mail --gran@netvision.net.ilCalling all computer nerdsIf you would like to help theACBL update its computerdatabase and you have experiencein RPG on an AS/400, there is a job for youin Memphis. The ACBL computer servicesdepartment has an opening fora full-time programmer at ACBL Headquarters. If interested please contact Kent Burghard in theAstoria Room on the third floor.“I received and read lesson 301-1. Daily Bulletin Page 9Goldman Continued from page 1Goldman’s most recent contribution to the gamehas been his keen interest in the development of bridgeon the internet.“I believe that this may be the last hope to savethe game. I’m doing what I can in this regard to helppromote internet bridge.“A commonly asked question is whether computerbridge is good or bad for ACBL bridge. For some clubowners, it’s definitely bad, because many of their potentialcustomers are staying home to play cards, but thepositive aspects are greater. People can learn about thegame on the internet and then they can migrate to themore social phase of the game at a club or tournament. In the long run it’s good for bridge.“On OKbridge, I do consulting, I play in matcheswith Paul Soloway and I do advanced topics lectures. One important concern in the field of commercializationof the game on the internet is making bridgecomprehensible to the public. It needs to be simple, and by that I mean bidding needs to be fairly naturaleven it means tournaments have to be encumberedby bidding restrictions. Of course, there are manyexperts who would disagree with me here.”Goldman has played in every NABC since 1967,and was a member of the aforementioned Aces until1974. It was shortly thereafter that Goldman struckup a long-term partnership with ACBL #1masterpoint-holder Paul Soloway.“Paul and I have played the preponderance ofyears since then, with a few exceptions that occurredfor professional reasons only,” said Goldman of the24-year relationship. The pair has played professionally on a numberof teams. Among the most recent was a stint on theteam of Jimmy Cayne, an expert player and a frequentteam sponsor. They were members of the Caynesquad for three years before (for a variety of reasons)they were cut from the team.“That was around 1994, and when Paul and I beganlooking around for other possible arrangements, we sawthat there had been a change in the marketplace. Therewas a large influx of foreign players who had been ableto get onto some good teams at lower pay than manydomestic experts would work for. So this created anunfavorable supply-and-demand situation for top-levelplayers. We were having trouble generating interest atthe fees we were used to getting,” said Goldman.“We eventually worked out an arrangement withRichie Schwartz when he expressed interest in forminga team. We had some mixed results. We were secondin the Miami Spingold, after having to adjust outteam roster for the ailing Peter Boyd. We were thirdin the Reisinger that year, and then we won the 1997Vanderbilt. That turned out to be the high point of theyear, however, and by the end of ‘97 Schwartz haddecided to release us.“We were still scheduled to play with Schwartzthrough the ‘98 Vanderbilt. We made it clear to himthat although Paul and I knew we would no longer beassociated with his team after that event, we wouldstill play our best for him at Reno.”Goldman explained that it was especially satisfyingfor him as a professional that the Schwartz teamwas able to repeat its victory in the Vanderbilt thisyear, despite the fact that the arrangement withSchwartz was coming to a close.“So at the end of ‘97 we went out to find anothersituation, only to find the market even weaker thanbefore. Nothing was occurring.“It was then that Bob Hamman first approachedSoloway about playing on Nick Nickell’s team. Paulcame to me immediately and said that he was seriouslyconsidering accepting the offer since we werehaving trouble getting work. He explained it to meand we discussed it. We gave ourselves another monthto find something together. When we didn’t, we decidedit was time to split.“I have great respect for Paul and I value ourfriendship. I don’t have any negative feelings aboutthe situation, or about Bob Hamman or Nick Nickell, who I think is a first-class guy.“Paul and I continue to play in regionals (at Winston-Salemwe won three out of the five events) and,of course, we are playing together on OKbridge inthe “Goldway” matches. But as far as top-level bridgegoes, I have no plans to play in the immediate future,at least through Lille.TUESDAY EVENING 0-20 PAIRS12 Pairs1.49 1 JoEllyn Johnson - JoAnn Thompson, Chicago IL 58.381.12 2 Shirley Liebhaber, Los Altos CA; Margo Parmacek, Palo Alto CA 48.000.84 3 Laurel Scheinman, Baltimore MD; Judi Trenton, Hartland MI 46.880.63 4 Tong Zhou - Owen Pataschick, Chicago IL 43.50TUESDAY EVENING 49ER PAIRS14 Pairs1.79 1 Bitty Bitters - Bev Bitters, Danville IL 70.001.34 2 Jean Shufelt - John Shufelt, W Bloomfield MI 69.000.89 3/4 Karen Hershberg, Harrison NY; Sandi Foreman, Scarsdale NY 68.500.89 3/4 Toels Thomson, Denmark; Anne-Mette Andersen, Westmont IL 68.500.62 5 Nancy Blaine - Joyce Rieckers, Reno NV 67.00TUESDAY EVENING 99ER PAIRS16 Pairs2.10 1 Gwen Allen, Chicago IL; Gordon Medlock, Syracuse IN 77.701.58 2 Helen Mehler, Hinsdale IL; Pat Warren, Westchester IL 77.601.18 3 Suzanne Bolotin, Evanston IL; Ellen Bero, Skokie IL 76.300.89 4 Kathy Bregler - Fred Bregler, Tampa FL 67.830.66 5 Suzy Fulkerson - Ron Fulkerson, Bloomington IN 64.20TUESDAY EVENING 199ER PAIRS34 Pairs3.47 1 Clifford Rhein, Saint Helena Is SC; Richard Bartone, Roseville MI 167.502.60 2 David Hudson, Evanston IL; Laurence Zung, Chicago IL 164.451.95 3 David Bryant, San Francisco CA; Nancy Ferguson, Greenbrae CA 159.001.46 4 Nevena Stoimirov - Ivan Stoimirov, Mountain View CA 149.001.10 5 Karol Lefkowitz, Scarsdale NY; Florence Singer, Harrison NY 145.500.87 6 Sandy Siddiqui - Aslam Siddiqui, Indianapolis IN 145.00TUESDAY FLIGHT B/C/D STRATIFIED PAIRS162 PairsB C D22.22 1 William Starns Jr, D-61352 Bad Hom BU; Speros Nicholas,Wiesbadeen GR 391.5016.67 2 Marty Freedman - Ellen Freedman, Lafayette CO 378.0010.94 3/4 Clement Gosiewski II, Chicago IL; Jeffrey Carter, Lombard IL 371.0010.94 3/4 Berta Meyerson Molsky, West Bloomfield MI; Marvin Molasky, WBloomfield MI 371.007.03 5 D Atteberry, Mattoon IL; Mark Daily, Lerna IL 368.504.61 6/7 Melody Gann - William White, Arlington TX 364.504.61 6/7 Jayne Paquette - Patricia Brish, Marquette MI 364.5014.70 8 1 1 Robert Bosley, Bellingham WA; Van Buchanan, Victoria BC 364.2511.03 9 2 Stephen Dunn, Laguna Niguel CA; William Schoenemann, PortLudlow WA 363.508.27 3 2 Shirley Johnson, Sheldon IL; Waneta Dailey, Watseka IL 360.836.20 4 Frances Rothenberg - Seymour Rothenberg, Windsor CT 357.134.65 5 Nick Rogers, Harrod OH; Sheila Lu, Huber Heights OH 347.503.78 6 3 Joyce Gautier - Norman Gautier, The Woodlands TX 345.632.62 7 Henry Arnold, Sewanee TN; Stephen Becker, Walla Walla WA 344.502.04 8 Charles Dailey - Charles Smith, Erie PA 343.632.84 4 Lee Ohliger, Ridgewood NJ; Ellyn Ritterskamp, Charlotte NC 335.462.27 5/6 Glenda Marshall - Billie Ainsworth, Tulsa OK 333.002.28 5/6 Sallie Krass - Nancy Turner, New York NY 333.00TUESDAY A/X STRATIFIED PAIRS136 PairsA X34.82 1 Frank King Jr, Alexandria VA; Sarah Cressy, Cataumet MA 1237.9527.50 2 1 Daniel Friedman - Linda Friedman, Orinda CA 1213.5020.63 3 2 Philip Altus - Muriel Altus, Tampa FL 1160.0015.47 4 3 Kent Mignocchi, Bronx NY; Ted Newman, New York NY 1147.2311.60 5 4 Barbara Lesser, Los Angeles CA; Adrienne Green, Venice CA 1141.508.26 6 Sean Ganness, Miami FL; Warren Oberfield, Pittsburgh PA 1140.008.70 7 5 Dianne Vander Sommen, Tampa FL; Carolyn Holcomb, Englewood FL 1136.504.65 8 Rhoda Prager, Allentown PA; Nancy Molesworth, Croton Hdsn NY 1131.374.83 9 Earle Davis, Glenview IL; Jerry Jackson, Chicago IL 1125.003.48 10 Chuck Malcolm - Marti Malcolm, Topeka KS 1120.066.53 11 6 Neil Montague, Swampscott MA; Bob Gorsey, Vlg Nagog Wds MA 1111.002.90 12 Marvin Talish, Merrick NY; Chuck Lamprey, White Plains NY 1109.514.25 13 Harvey Ackerman, Las Vegas NV; Jack Rhatigan, Cottage Grove MN 1107.004.61 14 Connie Coquillette - Sherwin Moscow, West Linn OR 1106.502.32 15 Alan Kleist, Cheverly MD; Leo Lasota, Laurel MD 1104.802.94 16 Joseph Payne, Los Angeles CA; Sandy Golden, Hinsdale IL 1100.972.05 17 John Ramos - Aaron Silverstein, New York NY 1099.876.07 18 7 Barbara Doran, Silver Spring MD; Donna Rodwell, Naperville IL 1089.501.83 19 Brenda Keller, Boise ID; Jack Coleman, San Francisco CA 1087.506.07 8 Jeanie Farquhar, Huntington Bh CA; Linda Beoddy, Lk In The Hls IL 1087.003.06 9 Sylvia Shallon, Los Angeles CA; Dolores Markovitz, Niles IL 1084.503.47 10 Walter Schenker, Pine Brook NJ; Michael Gore, Brooklyn NY 1082.912.50 11 Walter Rassbach - Nancy Rassbach, Westminster CO 1082.502.29 12 Jan Assini, Chagrin Falls OH; Peter Grover, Pittsburgh PA 1082.00“I was depressed for a couple of days after thesplit, but then I started to feel this sense of euphoria. When you’re heavily involved in something as I was(I have played in every NABC for the past 30 years),you sometimes can’t see that you’re in a rut.
