The hill served as a fortifiedliving area since prehistoric times, andclimbers will get to enjoy beautiful sightssuch as the Janakkala church, Lake Kernaalanjärviand Tervakoski.6 The Church of St LawrenceThe Church of St Lawrence is the latestamong the medieval stone churches inHäme. It was constructed by Åke Tott andit was inaugurated apparently in September1520.The rectangular ceiling is laid withbricks. The main door is to the west, thedirection of the setting sun and ‘the endof all’; and the altar faces east, the directionof the return of Christ and the resurrection.The vestry on the north side of thenave and the armoury on its south sidewere deconstructed in the 19th centurywhen the church was transformed into an“Empire style” cross-shaped church. Atthis point an angular vestry was built inthe east end of the building.The present-day bell tower was builtby Mårten Tolpo, a famous church builder.The bell tower was completed in 1785 andthe church bells date from the 17th and18th centuries.The pulpit dates to 1660s and was probablybuilt by Mikael Mikaelsson Balt ofOstrobothnia. Even so,the 68-year old plumbing experthas not retired yet; hiswork day still starts at 6am onthe dot. That’s when the phonestarts to ring – and it’s noteven switched off at night.The municipal authority is Janakkala’sbiggest employerThe core task of themunicipal authorityof Janakkalais to take care ofthe wellbeing ofits residents by providing goodquality,customer-oriented basicservices. These services are providedin the city of Janakkalaby almost 1,000 professionals invarious fields, over 700 of whichare in permanent employment.These fi gures make the municipalauthority of Janakkala itslargest employer.Janakkala has its own healthcentre, five day care centres,ten comprehensive schools,two upper and lower secondaryschools and one specialschool.
