Man shot by police in Tuusula

A man has died after being shot by police in Tuusula, central Uusimaa. The man was shot as he was being detained in an apartment block. In the last 13 years, four people have died after being shot by Finnish police.

Police announced on Tuesday that a man who they shot as he was being detained died at the scene. Officers were called out at 3:18 to respond to a stabbing, and when they arrived at the apartment block they found a seriously injured man on the stairs.

According to their information a suspect in the stabbing remained in the building. While making the arrest of a man born in 1980, police shot him and he died at the scene.

The case is under investigation by the State Prosecutor’s office.

In the last 13 years four people have died after being shot by police. The last time it happened was in Oulu a year ago, when a man was shot after attacking police with an axe.

In that case the prosecutor found that police acted appropriately.

In 2010 a security guard died when he was shot by accident during a target practice exercise at a police station in Pudasjärvi. A police officer was given a five-month suspended sentence for aggravated involuntary manslaughter.

A year before that, police shot a man during a siege situation in Humppila. No charges were brought.
