Espei Rasbora (Glaser)

Description

From our trading partners the globally renowned Aquarium Glaser.

The Espei Rasbora (Trigonostigma espei) is a captivating freshwater fish species native to Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia. Let’s dive into the fascinating world of these little gems:

  1. Appearance and Features:

    • The Espei Rasbora is a tiny, scaled fish with a deep red to orange body.
    • Its name comes from the black marking along its body, which resembles a lamb chop.
    • These rasboras have an average body size of 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) and can grow up to a maximum length of 2 inches (5 cm).
    • Typically, they have an average lifespan of 3 to 5 years.
  2. Tank Requirements and Care:

    • A 10-gallon (40-liter) tank is the minimum size recommended for a group of 6 Espei Rasboras.
    • Ensure the tank has a tight-fitting lid, as these fish are known to jump when startled or excited.
    • Espei Rasboras are typically found in forest streams and tributaries, so they prefer an environment with slow-moving water.
    • They thrive in stable water parameters:
      • Optimal water temperature: 73°F – 83°F (23°C – 28°C) (tropical environments in Southeast Asia).
      • Recommended pH level: 5.5 – 7.9.
      • Hardness level: 2 – 11° dH.
      • Alkalinity level: 2 – 10 dKH.
    • To simulate their natural habitat, create a blackwater environment in the tank:
      • Use dim lighting.
      • Add floating vegetation or small bags of aquarium peat to diffuse light further.
    • Decorate their tank with:
      • Dark, soft, sandy substrate to enhance their coloration.
      • Aquatic plants along the tank border.
      • Wood roots and branches to create shady spots and caves.
  3. Diet:

    • Espei Rasboras are omnivores.
    • Feed them a balanced diet of:
      • Meat-based foods: Fresh or frozen bloodworms, Daphnia, Artemia, brine shrimp, and insect larvae.
      • Vegetable options: Lettuce, zucchini, and kale.

In your aquarium, these little “lambchops” will add vibrancy and charm! 🌟🐠
