NBC Universal-owned, crime-focused network Oxygen Media is examining the story of America’s first female serial killer in a two-hour television event.

Produced by Jupiter Entertainment, Snapped: Notorious – Aileen Wuornos will peel the curtain back on the trial of Wuornos, a sex worker who was convicted of murdering six men between 1989 and 1990 by shooting them at point-blank range.

While on trial, Wuornos had claimed self-defense, noting that the men she was accused of killing had raped or attempted to rape her while working as a prostitute.

Through exclusive interviews with key reporters, police investigators, and a trial juror, the project will investigate the complexities of the case, and whether Wuornos – who was executed by lethal injection in October 2002 – was afforded a just trial, or was a victim of abuse painted in an unfavorable light by an ensuing media frenzy.

The program is the latest installment to the Snapped franchise, which originally debuted on Oxygen in August 2004 and now in its 22nd season.

Past Snapped: Notorious episodes have focused on convicted murderers Scott Peterson and Drew Peterson, as well as the murder of rapper Tupac Shakur.

Snapped: Notorious – Aileen Wuornos premieres March 25 at 6 p.m. ET/PT on Oxygen.

Jupiter Entertainment’s Stephen Land and Deborah Allen are executive producers.
