Edited to add user interface is a bit difficult to navigate.
But consider a few things. Mainly value for money. Look at how many games you get for the price of one. Look at the selection and range of games. Pretty incredible.
To date I have only really played streets of rage. I loved that game so much I don't know how many times I beat it. Now I have all three of them and will happily play them over and over. But I remember shinobi, loved it, and of course sonic. Some of the other games i will be discovering or rediscovering. But really it's simple minded fun at it's best.
And I love the introductory screen looking just like an old bedroom from the 1990s. A nice touch.
This is most defitely due to the emulation code and not the HD display or controller itself.
Some games seem worse than others (Sonic), though that could be due to the nature of the game.
I had high hopes for this collection, seeing how Sega had recently been working with the best in the emulation-to-modern-console field, M2, but M2 this is NOT. :(
I game on a PlayStation 24" 120Hz 3D Display, which has relatively low latency. I also have a PS3, Super Nt (FPGA based SNES), AVS (FPGA NES/FC), and a Model 1 Genesis system (via YPbPr cables). And those work great, even with Bluetooth wireless controllers on the NES/SNES.
I also have quite a few other emulated games on the PS4, such as the Namco games, NAM-1975, Neo-Turf Masters, and many more, and they run great.
On the other hand I bought the Metal Slug Anthology PS2 Classic on the PS4 and that has the same bad lag as the Genesis Collection. Though that's going through 2 layers of emulation (Neo•Geo to PS2, PS2 to PS4), so I suppose I expected it to not be perfect.
Oh, and there are also other issues here. Occasionally the video will stutter, and there is quite a bit of sound emulation issues where you can hear audible pops and other noise artifacts going on.
This is unacceptable for a 30 year old game console being emulated on a PlayStation 4! Sega had it perfected with their M2 developed emulation, why didn't they stick with that?
So yes, this is extremely disappointing. I really hope Sega fixes these issues!
If they can fix these serious game breaking issues with a patch I will be sure and update my review. Otherwise this is a 1 star game and I DO NOT recommend it at this time. Stick with last gen's Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, or a real Genesis system.
