It would be grossly old-fashioned to describe Arthur Weasley as ‘head of the household’ at The Burrow – and in any case, that mantle clearly belongs to Molly. So, what is it about this modest Ministry man, all endearing malapropisms and quaint obsessions, that makes our hearts lighten whenever he crops up in the story?

First and foremost, Arthur Weasley’s plain, unvarnished enthusiasm for Muggle culture, made all the cuter by his limited ability to understand – and indeed, pronounce – many of his beloved non-magic folk’s technical accomplishments. In spite of a borderline-obsessive fixation (his dearest ambition: ‘to find out how aeroplanes stay up’) he consistently mangles the names of everyday items, so escalators become ‘escapators’, fan heaters ‘ecklectic’ fires and telephones, are of course, ‘fellytones’.

His fascination for Muggle life – extending from such mundanities as banknotes and tents to his potentially lethal folly of insisting on stitches in his Nagini wound at St Mungo’s – is entirely in step with his staunch campaigning for Muggle equality. His job as Head of the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts office meant he was well placed to not only acquire and investigate the very things which fascinated him most, but moreover exploit connections and insider knowledge to help undermine the wicked anti-Muggle regime that crept in on Lord Voldemort’s return. 

The irony should not be lost on anyone that few are more guilty of dabbling in ‘Misuse of Muggle Artefacts’  than Weasley himself; for instance his highly controversial bewitching of a Ford Anglia.

Arthur’s interest in fighting the tyrannical scourge of ‘blood purity’ was more than academic. He maintained a long-standing feud with Lucius Malfoy, to the point that they had a public altercation in Flourish and Blotts, requiring Hagrid to intervene. Lucius took a dim view of anybody with close Muggle ties, and sought to sabotage Weasley’s mooted ‘Muggle Protection Act’ in any way his (considerable) influence would allow. 

Despite this and other examples of him standing up to powerful people – Barty Crouch, for one – many argue his solid but unremarkable career at the Ministry is hopelessly hampered by his mawkish sentimentality for Muggle-kind. Molly, perhaps unkindly, took this view, as did his officious son, fellow Ministry employee Percy. Percy not only accused his father of lacking the killer instinct to get ahead but went much further, ascribing the family’s relative poverty to his dad’s supposed lackadaisicalness. Even supportive, sympathetic Ted Tonks affectionately ribbed Arthur for being prone to ‘overstretch himself… him and his Muggle contraptions’.

On the one hand, this is grossly unfair – ambition for its own sake is the cause of much evil in the world. If only more people in positions of influence were as modest as Arthur. But even if we accept Arthur Weasley is soppy and sentimental, so what?

He clearly cherished his family above all else, like when he won a good sum of money in a *Daily Prophet* prize draw and treated his brood to a month-long holiday in Egypt. Though he later experienced horrible tragedy, he had plenty of reasons to be proud of his kids’ achievements: Bill’s fancy overseas Gringotts job, the twins’ entrepreneurial zeal, or Charlie’s captaincy of the Gryffindor Quidditch team. His enmity toward Lucius Malfoy was brutally underscored when his daughter Ginny nearly perished after the sly Slytherin planted Tom Riddle’s old diary on her.

His fierce loyalty extends beyond his own children, of course. Arthur Weasley treated Harry Potter very much as his own son, getting him Quidditch World Cup tickets, staying in touch when the young wizard was stuck at Privet Drive, and tolerating the inconvenience and peril of sheltering ‘Undesirable Number One’ with ample good humour. Weasley’s doting on The Boy Who Lived was repaid when Potter had a lifesaving vision of Arthur after the attack by Nagini left him fighting for his life, allowing him to be found in good time. 

But the real number-one relationship in Arthur’s life is with Molly Weasley. Their courtship and marriage is a shining example to all, from its surreptitious student sallies into the Hogwarts grounds, to ‘their song’ (<em>A Cauldron Full of Hot, Strong Love</em> by Celestina Warbeck), to the fact he usually does what he’s told even when his more mischievous instincts are inclined to lead him astray.

If our beloved Arthur Weasley can get excited over one singular battery, we can only dream of his elation if he were to get his hands on some of our favourite, everyday Muggle gadgets. Arthur, we’d swap everything on this list for a wand any day. 

## Washing machine 

They spin around. They wash things. They drain things. They spin around some more. They make a loud noise! They wobble about a bit! What’s not to love? Imagine introducing Arthur Weasley to an actual washing machine – a huge box full of goodies, such as a motor, a gearbox, cables, springs, the works. All of Arthur’s faves.

Despite the fact wizards and witches can simply use Scourgify should they need to do any washing, we can imagine Arthur spending hours of fun watching his robes spinning round and round... You know, despite magic being faster. 

We also conceive that Arthur would absolutely lose his mind over washing liquid tabs too.

## Electric drills

We know Arthur Weasley worships Muggle tools, due to his OTT reaction to a set of screwdrivers Harry gets him one Christmas. So, imagine when he sees the next level of these – electric tools.

With a press of a button, Arthur can enjoy the delights of... watching a drill make a loud noise. Now, that’s real magic. We also imagine The Burrow would be considerably more holey as a result, though. 

## Computers 

Based on what he does to his old Ford Anglia car, surely a computer would be the ultimate Muggle artefact for Arthur to get his hands on. He’d probably spend several weeks with the motherboard alone.

While regular Muggles sigh in irritation and end up on hold to a call centre when their computers break, we imagine Arthur would voluntarily break his just to put it back together again. We also imagine he would have an adorable social media presence. 

## Toasters

You put bread in. It springs back up and becomes toast. Even as Muggles, we still get pretty excited by the invention of the toaster, to be honest. We know in Arthur’s line of work at the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts office he’s had to deal with a hiccoughing one, on occasion. But that’s the job. Imagine if Arthur owned a fully-working one to play with in his spare time. Bliss. And so much toast. 

## Clapper lights 

Sure, light switches are cool – but clapper lights are where it’s at. And, well, though they might be considered a bit retro these days, need we remind you that wizards and witches still use parchment and quills? We understand the lack of computers – Muggle technology is known to go haywire in a magical environment – but not even a ballpoint pen, guys? 

Anyway, Arthur Weasley plus a clapper light would be hours of endless entertainment. Remember your first dimmer switch when you were kids? Be honest – that was a bit exciting. 

## Smartphones

Picture the scene: Arthur Weasley trying to make a video call on a smartphone and filming his ear the entire time. It’s a classic dad move, and when you happen to be a wizard-dad, the larks Arthur would have with a modern Muggle smartphone would potentially be endless. An Arthur Weasley selfie with his thumb over the camera would be a definite. And we live for the day that Arthur discovers emojis.  

## Robots!

As technology evolves for us Muggles, the more Arthur Weasley would have to get excited about. Although he’s already sort of invented a self-driving car. As our inventions get bigger and more innovative, we bet Arthur would certainly be keeping up to speed. Arthur would probably get more excited about a drone than an actually magic broomstick, wouldn’t he? 

We’d just love to see poor Molly’s face if Arthur ever discovered robots – and the hours he would spend tinkering with them. And don’t get us started on Artificial Intelligence – we wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if Arthur were to invent the wizarding world’s equivalent of the Terminator.

## Their hearts are open to those who need love
Molly and Arthur may have had plenty of their own kids to love, but it didn’t stop them from extending that to others who needed some. Harry is the most obvious person to benefit from this. From the moment he met the Weasleys on platform nine and three-quarters, and Molly realised he needed caring for, he was one of them. Whether it was Mrs Weasley knitting Harry an iconic Weasley jumper, Mr Weasley accompanying him to his hearing at the Ministry, Molly always making sure he had enough to eat, Arthur eagerly chatting to him about all things Muggle, Molly holding Harry in the wake of Cedric’s death or just the way they made sure that Harry knew their home was always open – they fully embraced him. Not only was it what Harry desperately needed, but it was a brilliant example to set to the rest of their children too. Mr and Mrs Weasley showed that love is not a finite resource and there is plenty to go around.

## They know when to let go
Sometimes you can do everything right as a parent and your child still pulls away from you – and all you can do is let it happen. Molly and Arthur certainly found this to be the case when it came to Percy. Even though they had tried to raise him with the right values and attitude, he still chose to side with the Ministry of Magic when it came to Voldemort’s return. We can only imagine what a gut punch that would have been for his parents. And while they did try to get him to see the truth – he wasn’t having any of it. However, Percy eventually saw the error of his ways and apologised to his family. Now this could have been a moment where his parents decided to be petty and to give him a taste of his own medicine – but they didn’t. The awesome and forgiving Weasleys accepted his apology and welcomed him back immediately, no questions asked.

## They would do anything to protect their children
Mr and Mrs Weasley would do anything to protect their children – and that includes Harry. You just need to look at the way that Molly killed Bellatrix, in a spectacular duel, to make sure that Voldemort’s right-hand woman could never harm her children again. Arthur is also no slouch when it comes to sticking up for his family. After all, the incredibly mild-mannered Weasley did get into a literal brawl with Lucius Malfoy when he dared to insult his clan. And when George was injured in the Battle of the Seven Potters, Arthur refused to let Kingsley check it was really him before he had seen his son. Harry even claimed he had never heard Mr Weasley shout like that before. Both Weasley parents were fierce protectors of their brood and would do anything to ensure that they were safe – which only added to their reputation as excellent parents.

## Molly knows how to keep her kids in line
This is one area where Molly truly excels – and Arthur could probably do a little bit more. Mrs Weasley knew how to run a tight ship… she had to with that many kids all under one roof. Her scolding was legendary, and it worked. When Molly unleashed one of her spectacular tirades, it wasn’t because she wanted to take out her frustration on her children, but because she wanted to push them to be the very best versions of themselves. Sometimes, when her children stepped out of line and did something spectacularly stupid (looking at you Ron and the time you crashed your dad’s car into a the Whomping Willow), her sharp words were necessary for their own safety. We can imagine when Ron received a Howler in his second year, it knocked some sense into him and made him more afraid to do something so reckless again (until he got involved in another of Harry’s adventures that is).

## Their own solid relationship
One thing that makes Molly and Arthur such great parents is that they are a team. This flame-haired pair have been together such a long time and while Molly may seem like the driving force in the Weasley household, she is supported by Arthur who is happy to let her lead. Molly says they knew they were meant to be together – even as a couple of Hogwarts students sneaking around the grounds. We also think they are the perfect fit, the love that these two have for each other is clear. For instance, when Arthur and the rest of the family returned after the Quidditch World Cup fiasco, Molly was beside herself with worry and flung herself towards her husband – who knew exactly how to comfort her. And even though Arthur may be known to tinker with things in his garden shed that aren’t strictly legal (flying cars and motorbikes for instance) … he would never do anything that he thought would hurt Molly. These two are a shining example of a fantastic relationship, and as a parenting team, they are unstoppable.

## The examples they set as individuals 
Molly and Arthur do make a great team, but as individuals they are awesome role models too. Arthur may have had a hard time from numerous people about his apparent ‘lack’ of ambition, but we think his work ethic, dedication and his goal of Muggle equality is something to be admired. Despite being a pure-blood, Arthur never believed himself to be better than Muggle-borns and Muggles, and that inclusive approach was something all his children emulated too. 

Molly was also someone her children (and others) could look up to. She was an incredibly talented witch, especially when it came to household and healing spells – and that should not be underestimated. Even though she had seven children to raise, she still found time to be an active part in the fight against Voldemort. She always made sure her family felt loved, would stand up to protect them (whatever the cost) and was someone who you should only mess with at your own peril. As parents go – Molly was ace.

## Knowing what is truly important
The Weasley family were never wealthy and while their lack of Galleons sometimes made their children feel slightly awkward (especially when awful people like the Malfoys made snide comments), it wasn’t what was most important to them. Their family was the top priority and the well-being of all seven of their children. And even though we know the kids weren’t always perfect, none of them were spoilt brats. Ok, so Ron maybe resented the hand-me-downs and probably would have liked a niftier broom – but he still knew that there were more important things in life. Ultimately, Molly and Arthur managed to raise their kids with the right priorities and as a result, all of them appreciated what family meant and enjoyed being together as one at The Burrow.

Alas, the filmmakers behind *Chamber of Secrets* had to find another way.

The light blue car (license number 7990 TD) that appears in the second film was an authentic 1962 Ford Anglia 105E, built in Ford’s factory in the United Kingdom. Special effects supervisor John Richardson took out the engine and gutted the vehicle to make it lighter, and then fitted it onto a rotating crane with a special joint called a gimbal head.

This let the filmmakers rotate, pitch, and roll the car backward and forward. They then fit the gimbal head onto the back of an American pickup truck with specially adapted suspension and outriggers so that they could create all kinds of flying effects while on the move.

The Ford Anglia made the [Muggle](/collection/muggles) news when, in 2005, the press reported that the car had been stolen from a film studio and found in a ruined castle in Cornwall. In fact, the car reported stolen was just one of many prop cars used in the making of the film.

‘We had 16 different Anglias,’ reveals John, ‘all of which were differently adapted.’

Some of them were cut in half to allow for filming inside, others had racing engines for high-speed driving, and others were in various stages of being smashed for the scene where the car crashes into the [Whomping Willow](/features/whomping-willow "The Whomping Willow"). According to John, the special effects team also built ‘wild’ cars that had been running around in the [Forbidden Forest](/features/the-forbidden-forest "The Forbidden Forest") for a year.

Many Weasley family members were there right from the beginning of the story – Ron was one of Harry’s best friends. Fred and George made us belly laugh pretty much from the moment we saw them. Mrs Weasley, after only meeting Harry once, sent him homemade Christmas presents!  And Percy... well he showed us just how important the role of a Prefect was at Hogwarts. It’s safe to say that in *Philosopher’s Stone* the Weasleys made their mark as individuals. Yet, it wasn’t until Chamber of Secrets that we saw them all together as a family unit – and what a family. Warm and welcoming, they swiftly became firm favourites of ours. 

Now we have to admit that it was difficult to pinpoint just one excellent Weasley family moment – there have been many. From Mrs Weasley presenting Harry with her brother’s watch when he came of age to spending a wizarding Christmas at The Burrow to Bill and Fleur’s wedding day (without the disruption at the end), we were hard-pressed to pick just one chapter. Yet, we kept circling back to the moment in *Chamber of Secrets* when Harry went to their house for the very first time and we think you’ll understand why...

‘Touchdown!’ said Fred as, with a slight bump, they hit the ground. They had landed next to a tumbledown garage in a small yard and Harry looked out for the first time at Ron’s house.

It looked as though it had once been a large stone pigsty, but extra rooms had been added here and there until it was several storeys high and so crooked it looked as though it was held up by magic (which, Harry reminded himself, it probably was). Four or five chimneys were perched on top of the red roof. A lop-sided sign stuck in the ground near the entrance read ‘The Burrow’. Round the front door lay a jumble of wellington boots and a very rusty cauldron. Several fat brown chickens were pecking their way around the yard.

‘It’s not much,’ said Ron.

‘It’s brilliant,’ said Harry happily, thinking of Privet Drive.

After an incident with a house-elf and Aunt Petunia’s pudding of sugared violets, things had become pretty much unbearable for Harry at Privet Drive. Confined to his room and fed through a cat-flap installed in his bedroom door, he felt like a prisoner. When Ron, Fred, George and a flying Ford Anglia prized the bars off his bedroom window and came to his rescue we knew things could only get better for him… and they certainly did.

After a flight back to the village Ottery St Catchpole, Harry saw The Burrow for the very first time and it couldn’t have been more different than that of the too-clean, characterless and suffocating Privet Drive. Ramshackle and clearly held together by magic, it was obviously a loving family home – something that Harry desperately needed. 

Not only did we see some familiar faces like Mrs Weasley and Ginny again, but we also met Mr Weasley – another wizard who would become a father figure to Harry. But most importantly, we got to witness the Weasley family in their element. Their in-jokes, their teasing (Mrs Weasley’s crush on Gilderoy Lockhart), their bickering (well if you are going to fly a car illegally...), it was exactly the opposite of Harry’s experience growing up. 

It was the very first time that Harry was also able to get stuck into life in a wizarding family. And after a hearty breakfast, he got to partake in wizarding chores like de-gnoming the garden. He saw what it was like to live in a house where magic was the norm. In short, Harry got to experience an entirely different type of homelife.

‘Beds empty! No note! Car gone ... could have crashed ... out of my mind with worry ... did you care? ... never, as long as I’ve lived ... you wait until your father gets home, we never had trouble like this from Bill or Charlie or Percy ...’

‘Perfect Percy,’ muttered Fred.

‘YOU COULD DO WITH TAKING A LEAF OUT OF PERCY’S BOOK!’ yelled Mrs Weasley, prodding a finger in Fred’s chest. ‘You could have died, you could have been seen, you could have lost your father his job –’

It seemed to go on for hours. Mrs Weasley had shouted herself hoarse before she turned on Harry, who backed away. ‘I’m very pleased to see you, Harry, dear,’ she said, ‘Come in and have some breakfast.’

What really made us fall in love with the Weasley family, was the welcome Harry received. The Dursleys never made Harry feel like he was wanted or that he belonged. He was the permanent outsider – barely tolerated, ignored where possible and treated terribly when acknowledged. In this chapter, despite the fact she was furious with her sons, Mrs Weasley made him feel immediately welcome. It was like she was expecting him, and the offer of breakfast showed that there was always room for him at their table. This was something Harry wasn’t used to, and her acceptance showed him how he should be treated by a loving family. 

This also marked the start of Harry’s long and happy relationship with the family as a whole. Yes, Ron had been his best friend but soon every member of the family became, well, family. For all intents and purposes, he was a Weasley. He was welcome during the holidays. He played Quidditch in their orchard. The family fought for him and protected him. Arthur Weasley took him to his Ministry hearing. Molly and Bill came to support him as family before the third task of the Triwizard tournament. He fell in love and started a family with Ginny – we could go on and on. And you could say it all began here in *Chamber of Secrets* when he was officially welcomed into the family home.

We had to finish on Harry’s comment at the end of the chapter – it sums everything up really. Before this, the only place that Harry had felt truly happy was Hogwarts. Now Harry had another place where he could feel safe and loved and it was all thanks to the Weasleys.

Where would you work in the Ministry of Magic?

## If you’ve always been incredibly ambitious... you’d work as the Minister for Magic 

Do you always have 14 hobbies on the go at once? Were you that kid in exams always asking for more paper? Are you constantly worrying about how to improve upon yourself? First of all, we think you’re doing great, and secondly, we think you’re doing so great, you’d have the potential to take on the top job in the wizarding world.  

The wizarding world has had several Ministers for Magic over its long rule, some of them good, some of them so bad that one actually proposed a [“Dementor breeding program”](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/ministers-for-magic). But the ones that succeeded brought great progression to the wizarding community – and we believe that’s exactly what you could do. After all, Hermione Granger was an over-achiever, just like you, and look where she ended up. 

## If you’re good with people... you’d work at the Department of International Magical Cooperation 

This job sounds like it requires a lot of meetings, so if you’re a social butterfly, this could be a role you could really embrace. This is where Percy Weasley started his political career, although the entry-level jobs for this department are more concerned about regulations for cauldron thickness than shaking hands with great wizarding world leaders.

But, if you stuck it out, we imagine this job could take you round the world, involve creating magical laws, and help to unite nations and embrace other wizarding cultures. So, if you put as much passion into the safety of cauldron bottoms as you do when it comes to meeting people, this job could be perfect for you. Eventually.

## If you want something relatively straight-forward... you’d work at the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts Office  

You’ll know this Ministry of Magic sub-department well, as it’s where our much-treasured Arthur Weasley worked. Ron may call it “the most boring department” but excuse us. Actually, the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts department is sometimes very interesting. Sometimes, it can involve a Muggle teapot that’s gone berserk. Sometimes it gets even crazier, when regurgitating toilets get involved. 

Alright, so it’s not as interesting as, say, being an Unspeakable at the Department of Mysteries (more on that in a moment) but it does sound like a good job to get stuck into if you want a job that’s dependable and relatively harmless. Moseying around London and magically fixing regurgitating toilets doesn’t sound all bad, especially if you have a huge family waiting for you at home. You’d get to travel round, see some of the mad ways Muggle artefacts have been tampered with, and be able to improve a lot of confused Muggles’ days. Not that they’d know about it – you have to perform a lot of Memory Charms in this job.

## If you are good at keeping secrets... you’d work at the Department of Mysteries 

One of the most enigmatic jobs in the Ministry of Magic lies in the Department of Mysteries, where employees are so secretive, they are called Unspeakables. 

Although we don’t know much about what the Unspeakables actually do, we learnt about their department during Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, where Harry and his friends learnt about different rooms specialising in different abstract concepts, such as love, death and time. So, if you’re good at keeping secrets, this is the job for you. But be warned: as interesting as this job sounds, it also sounds very dangerous – but maybe that’s more the case when Lord Voldemort suddenly has an interest in your department...

## If you’re a competitive person or are a sports obsessive... you’d work at the Department of Magical Games and Sports 

This department specialised in Quidditch, Gobstones and other wizarding world activities. We got to learn a little bit about it during the Quidditch World Cup, where former player, Ludo Bagman, worked during his post-sporting career. We even got a glimpse of its office in *Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoeni*x, where the office was described as ‘untidy-looking’ and a wizard was spotted with an armful of brooms. 

All in all, this job sounds like a lot of fun for a sports enthusiast and would certainly involve getting tickets to all the big matches. But we imagine, with a dangerous sport like Quidditch to look after, it wouldn’t be all... fun and games. 

## If you just want Harry’s job... you’d work at the Department of Magical Law Enforcement 

This department is perhaps most famously known for the fact it is where Aurors work, although it has a series of sub-divisions. It was Harry’s main goal to become an Auror (no surprises after his dealings with Lord Voldemort) which he fulfilled after the events of the Battle of Hogwarts. In his later years, he would go on to become the head of the department. 

So, if you want to follow in the footsteps of the Boy Who Lived, defeating the Dark Forces of the wizarding world and helping to attain justice wherever you roam, this is the job to sign up for. 

## If you’re talented at solving problems quickly... you’d work for the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes 

This job requires quick-thinkers and people who don’t get stressed out easily – and the clue is in the title as to why. Jobs within this department include the likes of the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad, who help sort out situations such as... inadvertently blowing up your Aunt Marge, for example. Those that are particularly adept at Memory Charms may become professional Obliviators.

Basically, this department is for selfless people who know how to tidy up other peoples’ messes – so you need to be made of strong stuff to work here. 

## If you love to travel... you’d work at the Department of Magical Transport 

From Portkeys to Floo Powder, this department takes care of all the magical ways a wizard or witch gets from point A to point B, and gave us the likes of [the Hogwarts Express](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/the-hogwarts-express) and [the Knight Bus.](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/the-knight-bus)

Depending on which section you worked in, you could end up developing the next big mode of magical transport – or maybe you’d just end up fining people for unauthorised Apparition. Either way, we imagine this job would require a bit of travel, just from the sheer nature of it.

## 7. Percy Weasley

__Coolest moment:__ ‘Hello, Minister!’ …. ‘Did I mention I’m resigning?’

__Verdict:__ We’re absolutely not saying you can’t be cool and be a Prefect, but Percy wasn’t exactly the most gracious of authority figures. He regularly threatened Ron with detention, and liked to remind everyone exactly what his title was – whether that be Prefect or Head Boy. And after he left Hogwarts and joined the Ministry, it was very not cool to be in league with Fudge and Umbridge and turn his back on his family. He definitely redeemed himself in the end, and the moment he announced his resignation in a duel was fantastic, but unfortunately that wasn't enough to tip the balance of Percy ending up at the bottom of the pile in the coolest Weasley child rankings.

## 6. Ron Weasley

__Coolest moment:__ ‘Weasley can save anything, He never leaves a single ring, That’s why Gryffindors all sing: Weasley is our King.’

__Verdict:__ Ron had a tough time staying cool under pressure, and we don’t blame him: three-headed dogs, giant spiders, Azkaban escapees – he really did have a lot to deal with during his time at Hogwarts. The great thing about Ron was that he had true courage – he was often afraid but conquered his fear and fought for good anyway. Unfortunately, that meant he wasn’t always exactly cool – remember those slugs? And it was supremely uncool of him to abandon Harry and Hermione on their Horcrux hunt. That being said, he did have some pretty cool moments – saving Harry from freezing water and destroying a Horcrux, that epic chess game in Philosophers Stone – but we picked the moment that the song – started as a taunt by the Slytherins – was taken over by Gryffindors to reflect Ron’s Quidditch Keeping success.

## 5. Charlie Weasley

__Coolest moment:__ ‘How are you? Thanks for the letter – I’d be glad to take the Norwegian Ridgeback, but it won’t be easy getting him here. I think the best thing will be to send him over with some friends of mine who are coming to visit me next week.’

__Verdict:__ This quote is taken from a letter Charlie wrote to Ron, who had asked him for help with Hagrid’s pet dragon. Pretty cool of an elder brother not to question this odd request, and ever cooler just to be able to just casually mention that you have friends who can help out with a Norwegian Ridgeback! Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see too much of Charlie, although we heard all about him working with dragons in Romania (also a very cool job!). He isn’t much higher on the rankings as we just can’t judge how cool he really was from the information we have – however according to Fred he did have to take his Apparition test twice because he ‘Apparated five miles south of where he meant to, right on top of some poor old dear doing her shopping, remember?’ Not cool, Charlie. Not cool.

## 4. George Weasley

__Coolest moment:__ ‘Saint-like,’ repeated George, opening his eyes and looking up at his brother. ‘You see ... I’m holy. Holey, Fred, geddit?’

__Verdict:__ Even after losing his ear, this Weasley twin was cracking jokes and trying to make everyone laugh – can you get any cooler than that? That being said, the rankings are getting pretty close together on the cool factor front as we reach the twins – though they did many of their coolest deeds together, so we’ve penalised them slightly for that (remember giving Harry the Marauder’s Map? Umbridge and the fireworks? Leaving that swamp in a corridor at Hogwarts with no instructions for how to get rid of it?). Legends.

## 3. Fred Weasley

__Coolest moment:__ ‘George,’ said Fred, ‘I think we’ve outgrown full-time education.’

__Verdict:__ Fred just edges ahead of his twin brother in these rankings, as he is often the ring-leader of the two. He’s usually the one with the witty one-liners, and therefore comes across as ‘cooler’ in his confidence – the quote above is said directly to Umbridge before they leave Hogwarts behind on their broomsticks. He’s also often the instigator – for example, he was the one driving the flying car in Chamber of Secrets, and it was his idea to use an Ageing Potion to try to enter their names in the Goblet of Fire. You might not think that makes him cooler – but we had to decide whether Gred or Forge came higher in the rankings somehow! ## 2. Ginny Weasley

__Coolest moment:__ ‘The thing about growing up with Fred and George,’ said Ginny thoughtfully, ‘is that you sort of start thinking anything’s possible if you’ve got enough nerve.’

__Verdict:__ Ginny almost makes it to the top of the Weasley rankings for coolness. She trained herself at Quidditch when her brothers never let her play, she had the meanest Bat Bogey Hex around (and wasn’t afraid to use it), and continued to cause havoc at Hogwarts to rebel against the Death Eaters in Deathly Hallows. She befriended Luna Lovegood, and stuck up for her, even though she wasn’t exactly the coolest Hogwarts student around, and when asked if Harry had a tattoo, completely styled it out and told everyone it was a Hungarian Horntail. Need we go on?

## 1. Bill Weasley

__Coolest moment:__ ‘However, Bill was – there was no other word for it – cool.’

__Verdict:__ He was always going to win this one, wasn’t he? He was a curse-breaker for Gringotts – how cool does that sound? And that was after being Head Boy and getting about a million OWLs, as well as sporting that ponytail and fang earring. This kind of pirate-style coolness was evident in something he said to Mrs Weasley when she was fussing over his appearance: ‘Mum, no one at the bank gives a damn how I dress as long as I bring home plenty of treasure,’ – so casual. Not to mention he married someone equally as cool and attractive as himself – Fleur Delacour – who was a Triwizard Champion and half-Veela. If that wasn’t enough, he took being attacked by Fenrir Greyback completely in his stride: … ‘in personality he seemed just the same as ever. All that appeared to have changed was that he now had a great liking for very rare steaks.’ Bill, we bow to your superior coolness.
